A cooling tower gearbox motor refers to the motor + gearbox assembly that drives the cooling tower fan. This is the most common drive system used in large induced-draft cooling towers (EVAPCO, BAC, Marley).

⭐ What is a Cooling Tower Gearbox Motor?


A cooling tower gearbox motor is a fan motor that connects to a gearbox, which then drives the large cooling tower fan at a reduced speed with increased torque.


Why use a gearbox?


Cooling tower fans are large-diameter (6–30 ft) and need:


* High torque

* Low RPM (90–225 RPM)

 But motors run at high RPM (900–1800 RPM).


The gearbox reduces the motor speed and increases torque to match the fan’s requirements.


⭐ Components in a Gearbox Motor System


1. Fan Motor


* TEFC or TEAO cooling tower duty motor

* Usually 10 HP – 100 HP (can be larger)

* Mounted outside or partially inside the fan deck

* Often inverter-duty for VFD control


2. Gearbox


* Right-angle gearbox,

* Common brands: Marley, Amarillo, Falk

* Typical ratios: 5:1, 6.3:1, 7:1, 10:1


3. Drive Shaft


* Vertical or horizontal stainless steel shaft

* Connects motor → gearbox


4. Fan Hub & Blades


* Attached to gearbox output shaft

1. Motor rotates at high speed (e.g., 1780 RPM).

2. Power is transmitted via the driveshaft.

3. Gearbox reduces speed (e.g., 6.3:1 → fan runs at ~282 RPM).

4. Torque increases, allowing the large fan to move high airflow (CFM).

5. Fan pulls air through the cooling tower, enabling evaporation and heat rejection.
