Cooling-tower fill (also called fill media) is the core internal component of an evaporative cooling tower. It greatly increases the surface area and the contact time between water and air, allowing heat to be transferred more efficiently. Fill is typically made from PVC, PP, or UPVC formed into structured patterns or splashed grid designs.
Cooling tower fill works by increasing the contact surface and contact time between water and air, allowing heat to be transferred more efficiently. As warm water flows over the fill material, it spreads into thin films or droplets, greatly enlarging the surface area. Air is simultaneously drawn or forced through the tower, moving across this expanded water surface. Through direct heat exchange and partial evaporation, the water releases heat to the air. By the time the water reaches the bottom of the tower, its temperature has been significantly reduced, improving the overall cooling efficiency of the system.
