For Marley cooling towers, the correct gear oil is critical because Marley Geareducers® operate in hot, wet, continuous-duty conditions.

Recommended gear oil for Marley cooling tower gearboxes

✅ Primary OEM recommendation

Marley Gearlube®

* ISO VG 220 (most standard Marley Geareduers)

* ISO VG 320 (high ambient temperature or heavy-duty service)

Oil type

* High-quality EP (Extreme Pressure) mineral oil

* Rust- and oxidation-inhibited

* Compatible with bronze components

Typical oil grade selection

Operating condition Recommended oil
Normal ambient (−5 to 40 °C / 23–104 °F) ISO VG 220
High ambient (>40 °C / 104 °F) ISO VG 320
Severe load / large fans ISO VG 320

 ⚠️ Do not use automotive gear oils (SAE 80W-90, 85W-140) unless Marley explicitly approves the equivalency.

Approved equivalent oils (commonly accepted)

If Marley Gearlube® is unavailable, these are widely used equivalents *(verify against current Marley documentation)*:

* Mobilgear 600 XP 220 / 320

* Shell Omala S2 G 220 / 320

* Chevron Meropa 220 / 320

* Carter EP 220 / 320

* BP Energol GR-XP 220 / 320

✔ EP industrial gear oil

✔ Anti-foam, anti-rust, oxidation-resistant

✔ Yellow-metal compatible

Oil change & maintenance guidelines

* Initial oil change: After first 500 hours (new or rebuilt gearbox)

* Routine oil change: Every 6–12 months (or per oil analysis)

* Oil level: Maintain at sight glass center while stopped

* Sampling: Use drain or sample port, not sight glass

 Common mistakes to avoid

❌ Using synthetic PAO or PAG oil without Marley approval

❌ Mixing different oil brands or viscosities

❌ Overfilling (causes overheating and leaks)

❌ Ignoring water contamination (milky oil)

Quick checklist before filling

* Confirm Geareducer model (e.g., MC, MF, MR series)

* Check ambient temperature

* Verify oil capacity from Marley manual

* Ensure gearbox is level and locked out
