The role of nozzles in cooling towers

The nozzle is the core component of the cooling tower water system, and its main functions are:

1. Uniform water distribution: 

Evenly distribute cooling water onto the packing to increase the air-water contact area.

2. Atomization or dispersion:

Main classification of nozzles

1. Classify by spraying method

① Spin nozzle (swirl nozzle)

Utilize water flow to impact the internal blades of the nozzle and generate rotation, forming a uniform circular spray surface.

Suitable for both cross flow and counter flow cooling towers.

Advantages: Simple structure, not easy to block, uniform water distribution.

② Reflective nozzle (impact type)

Water droplets are dispersed by spraying a water column onto a reflective disk.

Advantages: Large spraying range, low pressure requirement.

Commonly used in low-pressure systems (0.01-0.05 MPa).

③ Hollow cone nozzle

Spray out a circular water curtain, covering a wide area.

Suitable for cooling towers that require uniform thin layer water distribution.

④ Solid cone nozzle

Spray solid water cone with high flow rate and strong impact.

Suitable for large cooling towers or high flow conditions.

2. Classify by material

① ABS/PP plastic nozzle

Lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and low-cost.

Can withstand circulating water at 60-90 ℃.

Mostly used for air conditioning cooling towers and light industry cooling towers.

② Stainless steel nozzle (304/316)

Strong corrosion resistance and long service life.

Suitable for high salt, high pollution, and corrosive circulating water environments.

③ Copper nozzle

Good temperature resistance, suitable for high-temperature water systems (such as boiler feedwater towers).

8) Danfoss (manufacturer/solution related to its fluid control product line)

Introduction: Although Danfoss is known for its compressors, controls, and drives, it also provides nozzles/matching components for fluid control and process equipment matching, or collaborates with system integration vendors to provide solutions for cooling and process cooling (some industry lists and vendor articles mention that its nozzles/accessories are used for cooling applications).
