Cooling tower fill media (also called *packing*) is designed to maximize heat transfer by increasing the contact area and time between water and air. Based on industry practice (BAC, Marley, EVAPCO, SPX, Hamon, etc.), fill media is classified as follows:

1. Film Types of Cooling Tower Fill Media (Most Common)

How it works:

Water spreads into a thin film over large surface area sheets.

Common Types

* PVC film fill (standard HVAC & industrial use)

* PP film fill (high-temperature or chemical duty)

Characteristics

* Very high thermal efficiency

* Low air pressure drop

* Compact design

Typical Applications

* HVAC cooling towers

* Power plants

* Process cooling

Common Designs

* Cross-fluted film fill

* Vertical fluted film fill

* Honeycomb / cellular fill

2. Splash Types of Cooling Tower Fill Media

How it works:

Water is broken into droplets by repeatedly splashing over bars or grids.

Common Types

* Splash bars

* Grid splash fill

* Trickle splash fill

Materials

* PP (polypropylene)

* PVC

* Wood (old towers)

* Ceramic (rare, high-temp)

Characteristics

* Handles dirty water well

* Lower clogging risk

* Lower thermal efficiency than film fill

Typical Applications

* Petrochemical plants

* Steel mills

* Mining cooling towers

* High suspended solids systems

3. Low-Clog / Anti-Fouling Types of Cooling Tower Fill Media

Designed for poor water quality.

Types

* Wide-gap film fill

* Vertical flow low-clog film

* Hybrid film + splash fill

Characteristics

* Moderate efficiency

* Reduced maintenance

* Longer service life

4. Fill Media by Cooling Tower Airflow Type

A. Counterflow Cooling Tower Fill

* Vertical fluted film fill

* Splash fill (bar or grid type)

* Low-clog vertical film fill

B. Crossflow Cooling Tower Fill

* Cross-corrugated PVC film fill

* Gravity-fed distribution compatible

* Common in BAC & Marley crossflow towers

5. Fill Media by Material

Material Max Temp Typical Use
PVC ≤ 55–60°C HVAC & clean water
PP ≤ 80–90°C High-temp & chemical
Wood ≤ 50°C Old installations
Ceramic >100°C Extreme duty

6. Specialized Fill Media

1. High-Temperature Fill

* Polypropylene (PP)

* Used in refinery & power plant towers

2. High-Efficiency Fill

* Small flute spacing

* Maximum surface area

* Clean water only

3. Drift-Reducing Fill Designs

* Optimized water breakup

* Often paired with high-efficiency eliminators

Quick Selection Guide Of Types of Cooling Tower Fill Media

* HVAC / clean water: PVC film fill

* Dirty / high solids water: Splash fill or low-clog fill
