If a cooling tower motor stops working, the fan will no longer run — and that creates several immediate and serious effects on the cooling process. Here’s what typically happens:


1. Cooling capacity drops sharply


Without the fan, airflow stops.

No airflow = very little evaporation = water won’t cool down.


This results in:


* Higher cooling tower outlet water temperature

* Reduced chiller efficiency

* Reduced condenser performance


2. Chiller high-pressure trips


Most chillers rely on cool condenser water from the tower.


If tower water gets too hot, the chiller’s condenser pressure rises until:


High-pressure safety trips, shutting the chiller down

Cooling to the building or plant comes to a stop


3. Equipment overheating


If the system keeps running:


* Compressors run hot

* Pumps run hotter because they’re circulating hot water

* Piping and components see thermal stress



4. Risk of biological growth


Warm, stagnant water increases:


* Legionella risk

* Algae growth

* Scale formation


5. Mechanical issues


If the motor stops due to failure, it may indicate:


* Motor burnout

* Fan gearbox seizure

* Belt break (for belt-driven systems)

* Electrical faults

* Overload relay trip


Running the tower without a working fan for long periods can also:


* Overheat gearboxes

* Cause drift eliminators to dry out

* Damage the fill media due to hot water
